30 Questions to Ask Your Parents Before It's Too Late
Most of us assume there will always be time to ask. Then one day there isn't. The stories our parents and grandparents carry — how they met, what they feared, the choices that shaped everything — are extraordinarily fragile. They live in one person's memory, and when that person is gone, they're gone for good.
The good news is that capturing them is simple. You just have to ask. Below are 30 questions we use in our own interviews to unlock a lifetime of memories. Ask a few over dinner, or work through them slowly over several conversations. Record the answers if you can — you'll treasure the sound of their voice later.

- Where were you born, and what was the world like then?
- What's your very first memory?
- What were your parents like — and what did you inherit from each of them?
- Who else lived in your childhood home?

- Was there a moment as a kid when you felt truly happy?
- What did your family worry about, or celebrate?
Growing up
- What kind of student were you?
- Who was your best friend, and what did you get up to together?

Love, family and relationships
- How did you meet your partner? What do you remember about that day?
- What was your wedding like?
- What surprised you most about becoming a parent?

- Is there something you wish you'd said to someone, but never did?
Work and life's journey
- What was your first job, and what did it teach you?
- What are you most proud of in your working life?
- Was there a decision that changed the direction of your life?
- What did success come to mean to you over time?
- Where have you lived, and which place felt most like home?

Turning the answers into something lasting
A recording is a wonderful start. But recordings get lost on old phones, and transcripts sit unread in a drawer. To truly preserve a life story, it helps to shape those answers into a written narrative — something the whole family can hold and pass down.
That's exactly what we do at Opus Eternal. We conduct the interviews, do all the writing, restore the photos and produce a beautiful printed book — so your parent or grandparent only has to talk. If these questions stirred something in you, book a free consultation and we'll help you preserve their story before the window closes.
Because everyone has a story worth remembering.
Ready to preserve a story of your own?
We turn interviews into beautiful printed memoirs — your loved one just talks, we do all the writing.
